Breaux Bridge - Yola Davis Sylvester of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2008. Mrs. Yola struggled for 10 years with cancer and graciously committed her spirit to our Lord, the Almighty.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, January 5, 2009, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge. Interment will follow at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery.
Yola Davis Sylvester, was born on April 1, 1922, to the honorable parents of Emellette Castille Davis and Raymond Davis, in Breaux Bridge (Au Large). She attended St. Francis of Assisi, when it was an old wooden shuttered building, without the modern conveniences of our day. She later attended adult education classes at Carver High School to get the education that she so greatly valued.
She was employed as a highly skilled and sought after cook at numerous restaurants such as, Mim's Caf, Guidry's Restaurant, Mulate's and finally at Crawfish Kitchen. Her passion for cooking was admired by all who knew her.
Mrs. Sylvester was parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge, a lifelong member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court No. 49, with 49 years of dedicated service.
Our Mom, better known as "Ms. Noire", was anointed as a spiritual healer "traiteuse" by our Lord Almighty. She healed the aches and sprains of numerous persons and athletes.
Mrs. Sylvester is survived by four sons, Lawrence Sylvester and wife, Debra, of New Orleans, Clarence Sylvester, Clovis Sylvester, Jr. and wife, Mary Ann, and Michael Sylvester, all of Breaux Bridge; four daughters, Mary Ann Sylvester Criswell and husband, Floyd J., of Houston, TX, Agnes Sylvester Edgerson and husband, Orlando R., of Missouri City, TX, Louella Sylvester Stanley and husband, James, Jr., of Houston, TX, and Margaret Ann Sylvester Myers, of Killeen, TX; 19 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Louise Davis Perry and two sisters-in-law, Mary Lambert Davis and Daisy Alex Sylvester; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clovis Sylvester, Sr.; her parents, Raymond and Emmelette C. Davis; one son, Landry Sylvester; one daughter, Emily Sylvester; two brothers, Paul and Clifton Davis; and five sisters, Angelina Abraham, Grace Celestine, Cecilia Boyd, Mildred Sylvester, and Theresa Gary.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday and continue at 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Monday.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Pallbearers will be Peter Sylvester, Marcus Myers, Elton Sylvester, Jonathan Sylvester, Steven Perry, Ricky Gary, and Clifton Davis, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Sylvester, Floyd Criswell, James Stanley, Jr., Orlando R. Edgerson, Lawrence Sylvester, and Julius X. Myers.
The Sylvester family would like to graciously thank the following, Debra Hypolite, Mary Lagrange, Activities of Daily Living Adult Daycare Center, Cheryl Williams, of Maison de Williams, the staff of Lafayette General Medical Center, and all the prayers of the faithful.
