St. Martinville - Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at St. Martin de Tours Roman Catholic Church in St. Martinville, for Zerven V. Bernard, Sr., 95, who passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.
Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Msgr. J. Douglas Courville will officiate at the funeral Mass and conduct the funeral service. His grandchildren will serve as gift bearers.
Mr. Bernard was a veteran of World War II, having honorably served in country in the United States Army Air Force. He was retired after working for the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs for 28 years. A devout Catholic and dedicated to serving his church parish of St. Martin de Tours, Zerven was a member of the church choir for many years. He was a dedicated civil servant who was very involved in his community. Mr. Bernard was a member of the American Legion Post 293 in Catahoula, the Disabled American Veterans Association, A.A.R.P., and he also served as Chairman of the St. Martin Parish Draft Board for 10 years. A devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather - he will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include two sons, Ernest S. Bernard and his wife, Roslyn, of Lafayette, and Zerven Vincent Bernard, Jr. and his wife, Jane, of Berwick; one daughter, Loula Savoy and her husband, Darrell, of St. Martinville; two brothers, Charles Bernard, Jr. and his wife, Nelda, of Lafayette, and Nicholas Bernard, of Tulsa, OK; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Loula Lovas Bernard; his parents, Charles and Valerie Judice Bernard; two brothers, Stama and Mim Bernard; and three sisters, Nadage Bernard, Media "Sis" Gonsoulin, and Libbie Webre.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Friday and continue at 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Saturday.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Pallbearers will be John Burton, Robert Burton, Randy Bernard, Dane Bono, Charles Bernard, and Nicholas Bernard.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
